‘The Beauty of Moray’ - New traditional tune for Moray to be premiered at a community concert in Fochabers
A new traditional tune for Moray, ‘The Beauty of Moray’, composed by musicians Duncan Chisholm and Hamish Napier, will be premiered in a community concert next month.
The concert will take place at Fochabers on 22nd September at Fochabers Public Institute, which will see Duncan and Hamish premier the tune in performance alongside local musicians.
As established traditional musicians with ties to the local area, Duncan and Hamish have been commissioned to compose an original memorial piece designed for teaching and learning.
Duncan Chisholm said, “Myself and Hamish are very excited to be a part of this wonderful project. Remembering Together is about reflection and connection with the people of Moray through art. To have been given the opportunity to create a piece of music for Moray was an incredible honour, and we are very much looking forward to teaching and sharing our music in Moray.”
The concert is being organised with support from local musician and music teacher Mhairi Marwick of Arc Sessions and is being shared widely with music students across Moray in the run-up to the concert to enable community contribution on the day.
Duncan and Hamish will also be running a compositional workshop on the afternoon of the 22nd at Fochabers Public Institute from 3.30 pm - 5 pm where they will share practical insights into the writing process. This workshop is being offered to young musicians through schools and local music teachers.
Musicians who have learned The Beauty of Moray are invited to a ‘big play through’ of the tune with Duncan and Hamish at Focabers Public Institute from 5 pm - 5.30 pm on Friday the 22nd of September.
Anyone who wishes to attend the concert, including community musicians, must book a free ticket at the Eventbrite link below. Tickets will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and we expect tickets to go fast!
About the Musicians
Duncan Chisholm is one of Scotland’s most recognised and accomplished fiddle players and composers. Duncan’s music contains the rarest of chemistries, a glorious combination of invention, tenderness and passion. He creates music that requires no introductions or programme notes to carry you on its journey, sumptuously layered and awash with dazzling colours, textures and rhythms. The sound may be traditional but this is 21st Century traditional music which is sophisticated, exhilarating and meltingly beautiful.
“The indisputable eminent fiddle composer of his generation.” Penguin Eggs
Hamish Napier is a Scottish folk multi-instrumentalist, educator and composer inspired by the heritage and nature of his native landscape. His music is beautifully constructed, evocative and distinctive. Hamish always strives for a balance between tradition and innovation, celebrating and respecting Scotland’s rich musical heritage while transcending boundaries, with jazz, electronic and classical techniques and has an incredible gift of painting pictures with sound.
“There’s stunning craft to Hamish’s music making” Robert MacFarlane
