Meet the Artist: Catrin Jeans
Remembering Together: South Ayrshire have appointed their artist to co-create memorials with communities. Meet Catrin Jeans.
Catrin is an artist, researcher and educator who specialises in engagement and participation using a rights and relationship-based approach. At the heart of her practice is the idea that different ways of knowing, being and doing should be valued. Catrin has 14 years’ experience of working collaboratively using making, playing and listening as a means to co-construct, empower and drive social action. Catrin is co-founder and producer of child and young person-led artist collective Rumpus Room.
Catrin says: “It is very rare a nationwide commissioning opportunity occurs, and this programme feels so timely, as we learn to live with covid. Yet for so many, the loss, trauma, and struggles from the pandemic continue. As a Remember Together artist, it feels a privilege to hear, share and remember with people across South Ayrshire, and cultivate meaningful reflection and action through co-constructing together.”
“South Ayrshire has historically been a holiday destination - with its golden sands, wide promenades and rolling hills. From the Victorian times, holidaymakers escaped from the city to find respite ‘doon by the watter’. My approach is to bring rest and relaxation to those most impacted by the pandemic within our own community; by providing a nurturing environment to reflect and heal together. Inspired by South Ayrshire’s vision of empowering communities to start well, live well and age well, I will co-construct with children, young people, families, and adults that need or provide care.”
