Remembering Together South Lanarkshire is coming to a close
The benches will be fully installed by Spring 2025 when planting and events will take place.
A circle - togetherness - separation longing - divide - nature - water - flow - air - stone - text - connection - community
Design influenced through workshops with communities, taking aspects from each groups idea about what the memorial should look like and what it should convey. The installation combines natural materials and engraved text. Stone, whilst also having hardwearing qualities, makes reference to the passing of time and deep memory. T
he memorial will provide a point of interest amongst a natural landscape, marking a viewing point or place to pause and reflect.
After discusions with community groups and the council2 locations were chosen:
Fernbrae Meadows: Participants sites this as somewhere that was important for them during the pandemic, the wild meadow areas offering a reminder of the changing seasons and abundance o life.
Cuningar Loop: This site, as a new development, offers great accessibility for visitors with level and wide pathways, toilets and Parking on site.
A third community led project at Langloch Farm in Lanark has been installed, the community group at Clydesdale Community Initiative decided that they would like to design and build their own community bench, in addition to the sculptural seating for the wider project. This came out of their skills of woodworking and determination to create something more local for the group and visitors to the site.
Throughout Phase 2 we have had filmmaker Bircan Birol follow and document the project. Bircan Birol is a documentary filmmaker who dives into the connections between generations and community ties. The documentary will be released in Spring 2025 and will be shown at the memorial launch event and archived with Stirling University and added to this website.
