Welcome to West Dunbartonshire

West Dunbartonshire has a population of 89,000 people and is essentially comprised of three main areas (Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven) with additional villages. The area is surrounded by the natural beauty of Loch Lomond, the Clyde, and the Kilpatrick hills. West Dunbartonshire has a long and distinctive history with Dumbarton sitting as the ancient capital of Strathclyde, the legacy of shipbuilding, and textile innovation.

The Remembering Together memorials will run in parallel with West Dunbartonshire Council’s plans for memorial gardens, provisionally in Levengrove Park, Christie Park and Dalmuir Park.

During Covid, there were over 300 covid related deaths with an additional wider impact on job loss, financial insecurity, wellbeing, and mental health.

Although everyone in West Dunbartonshire has been affected by the pandemic, some people and groups have been more adversely affected. This is particularly true of people already experiencing significant inequalities. 40% of West Dunbartonshire’s SIMD data zones sit in the bottom 20% nationally with 25% of children living in relative poverty. West Dunbartonshire also has a higher than average population of people with “limiting health problems or disabilities”
