Orkney Phase 2: Ros Bryant

In the Orkney Islands, Remembering Together projects have been commissioned in five communities: Flotta, Shapinsay, East Mainland, North Ronaldsay and Sanday.

Meet Ros Bryant, the artist working in Flotta.

‘It’s my stone letter carving that’s landed me up travelling from Westray via Orkney mainland to work with folk on the smaller island of Flotta. I worked for 8 years in local flag and sandstone from an open studio in Stromness, both lovely carving stones. Leading regular courses made me aware of how willing and able folk on Orkney can be.

Through several years of renovating a Westray steading I’ve become familiar with setting stone on stone.

And the journey that brought me to Orkney - I was educated first as a musician, then a nurse before becoming a self-employed artist about 20 years ago working in woven tapestry then stone, missing the ferry in Stromness I hitched a lift that became a lifetime’s friendship…’
